1/4 usg durock® cement board should not be used for wall or ceiling applications. Make that up, by having the tile sit over the cement board just slightly, (where it meets the 3/8 s/r).

Should i use 1/4 or 1/2 cement board. You should also be undercutting you jambs and casings to accept the tuck of the cement board and the tile and the two layers of. The extra thickness is needed to span the studs and provide a solid base for the tile. If it were attached to properly waterproofed drywall, plywood, or plaster it would be fine.

This will be rigid and strong enough to resist any deflection or flexing from any impact on the wall. Either can be used on floors but only 1/2 can be used on walls. A cement board with a minimum thickness of ¼ inch is required, but thicker panels may also be used.

Never use a 1/4″ thick cement board for shower walls as this will deflect and flex if it is pushed or bumped accidentally. That said, for safety’s sake, especially with a wood burning fireplace, 1/2” cement board is ideal for under your fireplace surround tile. Foam shower tile backer boards are generally about 4x the cost of cement board.

Durock 1/4 is made for floors. Think about it, one wayward elbow, knee, or hip bump and you may get flexion which would cause the grout (or tile) to crack. What subfloor should hardiebacker board be installed over?

Spread a thin layer of mortar over the concrete, following instructions from your manufacturer. It does not belong as a floor or a roof; You should be using a minimum of 1/2″ thick cement board for shower walls.

For flooring or wall installation, some builders choose to apply a thin layer of thinset mortar under the cement. The minimum recommended thickness for the shower wall is 1/2″ because like some of the other boards, they become far too flexible at thicknesses below 1/2″. Apply a layer of mortar.

That way, the difference will only be 1/8. It should be almost unnoticeable if done right. The minimum subfloor specified is 5/8 exterior grade plywood or 23/32'' exterior grade osb subflooring. The 1/4 thickness helps eliminate transition trim when abutting carpet or wood flooring and minimize level variations with other finish materials.

1/4 inch, ½ inch, and 5/8 inch thick cement board panels are all appropriate for countertop installations. For wall or ceiling applications, use 1/2 or 5/8 durock cement board.if you have 3/8 sheetrock, use 1/2 cement board and feather out the joint to approx 10 to 12. 1/4 durock cement board should not be used for wall or ceiling applications.

Also, can you use 1/4 cement board on floors? Don't use regular drywall or wood screws, which corrode in cement board.
